Studies have shown that dental professionals play a critical role in creating pathways of safety for survivors of domestic violence. In this presentation, you will learn about Women’s Advocates, stats/intersectional issues of domestic violence, the definition of domestic violence, 6 forms of violence, long-term consequences of abuse, general and dental specific warning signs, screening questions/how to support patients experiencing domestic violence, and resources online and in the community that you can lean on/refer to patients.
Women’s Advocates is a domestic violence shelter for women and children, based in St. Paul but providing services to residents from all across Minnesota and numerous other states. They provide housing, mental health therapy, support groups, connections to employment and financial assistance, legal assistance, and more to nearly 50 women and children daily. Their aftercare program lasts for an additional year after families have left shelter, and their violence prevention education program reaches over 7,000 individuals every year. Trainer: Brenisen Wheeler
Brenisen Wheeler is the Education and Outreach Coordinator at Women’s Advocates, one of the first domestic violence shelters in the nation. Her educational background includes a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota and several years of research experience studying identity, mental health, and trauma. Since starting at Women’s Advocates in April 2019, Brenisen has presented to over 2,000 individuals in the effort to address domestic violence where we live, learn, work and gather as well as the intersectional issues within those such as homelessness.
